Brookfield Primary

Learning

Rationale

At Brookfield Primary School, our curriculum is designed with the intent to cultivate young people who are creative, curious, and critical thinkers. We aim to develop individuals who are not only knowledgeable but are also deeply caring—about their family, each other, the world around them and their learning. Our commitment to this vision shapes the core of our educational approach, ensuring that every child is supported, challenged, and inspired to grow in a nurturing environment.

Our Commitment to Developing Well-Rounded Learners

We believe that a meaningful education is about equipping children with the skills and values needed to navigate a rapidly changing world. At Brookfield, we aim to foster in our children:

  • Creativity: Encouraging imaginative thinking and problem-solving through diverse learning opportunities.
  • Curiosity: Inspiring a love of learning and encouraging children to ask questions, explore ideas, and seek new experiences.
  • Critical Thinking: Teaching children to engage thoughtfully with the world, to question, reason, and communicate their ideas effectively.
  • Care and Compassion: Promoting kindness, empathy, and a deep respect for others, our community, and the environment.

Our Acdemic Aspirations for every child

Our core values - Achievement, Responsbility and Kindness - are at the heart of everything we do and underpin a curriculum built on strong foundations in reading, wrting and mathematics. We know these skills open doors to all other subjects, so we place a high priority on ensuring every pupil makes the most of their learning time each day. Alongside this, we nurture curiosity, creativity and character so children develop as well-rounded learners and are ready for the challenges of the modern world. Through targeted support, challenge, and high expectations, we enable every child to succeed academically while growing in resilience, independence, and a love of learning

A Knowledge-Rich, Carefully Sequenced Curriculum

We believe that a solid foundation of knowledge is key to developing confident, informed learners. Our curriculum is knowledge-rich and carefully sequenced, going beyond the epxectations of the national curriculum. We provide depth and breadth of knowledge, enabling children to build knowledge and skills sequentially over time, allowing children to form schemata — interconnected webs of knowledge — that help them make sense of new learning.

Brookfield’s curriculum is more than a pathway to academic achievement. It is a journey that develops well-rounded, socially conscious individuals who are ready to face the challenges of the future. By prioritizing creativity, curiosity, critical thinking, and compassion, we aim to empower children to take responsibility for their learning and their actions.

Learning Opportunites That Go Above and Beyond

Beyond the classroom, our pupils benefit from a rich variety of learning experiences that broaden their horizons and bring learning to life. Philosophy and debate sessions encourage critical thinking and confident self-expression, while visits from professional artists and musicians inspire creativity and a love of the arts. Our project-based learning includes memorable opportunities such as performing with the Primary Shakespeare Company at Jacksons Lane, writing for the school newspaper, and taking part in the £5 entrepreneurship challenge. Children engage with democracy through mock elections and our active school council, and they develop leadership skills through initiatives like The Economist leadership for change project. Partnerships with world-class institutions such as the Francis Crick Institute spark curiosity in science, while Forest School provides hands-on learning in nature. These experiences, along with annual highlights such as the Year 2 Christmas production and the Year 6 summer musical, ensure that every child grows not only academically but as a confident, creative, and socially responsible member of the community.
