Enriching the Curriculum
We enhance our curriculum with thoughtfully designed programs and learning opportunities that broaden our children’s experiences and deepen their understanding of the world. These include:
Forest School:
Offered to children in Nursery and continued in Years 1, 3, and 5, Forest School encourages outdoor learning, environmental awareness, resilience, and teamwork. It provides a hands-on approach to exploring nature, building confidence, and fostering a deep connection with the natural world.
Our sessions take place both in our brand-new forest garden and in the beautiful surrounding woodlands. These experiences allow children to develop problem-solving skills, creativity, independence, and perseverance. They learn to take measured risks, work collaboratively, and appreciate the changing seasons — all while boosting their physical health, well-being, and sense of curiosity about the world around them.
Philosophy for Children:
We have partnered with the extraordinary Philosophy Foundation, whose incredible Philosophers facilitate sequences of sessions for children from Year Two through to Year Six. We introduce philosophy to encourage reflective thinking and respectful dialogue, and we see the reasoning skills developed through philosophical enquiry as an indispensable foundation for all aspects of learning.
These sessions help children articulate their thoughts, listen to others, and engage in open discussions about complex questions — greatly enhancing their critical thinking and emotional intelligence.
Artist in Residence:
Our Artist in Residence, Alix Smith, works with all year groups, providing children with opportunities to explore various art forms and develop their creative skills with outstanding art and design projects. Through these opportunities, children engage in collaborative projects, express themselves artistically, and gain an appreciation of different artistic techniques and cultural perspectives.
Debate and Oracy:
Throughout the school, we place a strong emphasis on developing oracy skills. This year, we are part of the Debate Hub network and will take part in competitions against schools from across London, we are also developing our own bespoke Debating curriculum and are embarking on a project across Camden where children will be encouraged to discuss and debate topical issues, learn to present arguments, and listen to differing viewpoints through local debating competitions. The skills we wish to develop through our approach to oracy and debate not only builds confidence but also fosters an understanding of diverse perspectives and the importance and power of effective communication.
Project-Based Learning:
We are starting a new program of project-based learning to complement our coverage of the National Curriculum. We are committed to offering children a range of challenges that help them develop lifelong skills, benefiting them both now and as they move through future stages of education.
At Brookfield, we believe wholeheartedly in creating tangible outcomes for children. We achieve this by challenging them with an exciting range of projects woven through their Brookfield experience, including writing and selling a school newspaper, developing a business for a school market, performing a play in a real theatre, and making documentaries to be shown at a local cinema.
