P.E.
At Brookfield we believe that physical education is a key component of children’s overall education and development. It enables children to improve their core motor skills as well as developing self esteem, social inclusion, teamwork and fitness. This is particularly important at Brookfield where, as an inclusive school, we have a high number of children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.
We are fortunate to have a full time PE teacher who teaches the majority of lessons at Brookfield; however, we also want to empower our teachers to feel confident in delivering high quality lessons. Lessons start with a thorough warm up led by teachers and children. Children enjoy taking responsibility for leading the warm ups and these opportunities help to develop the children’s leadership and management skills. During lessons, all children are encouraged to develop or improve a specific skill and are also given responsibility to coach and support each other.
At Brookfield, children learn to swim in Year 4 where they are given a block unit over the course of 2 weeks to attend our local swimming pool. We also use our local Lido to give additional pool time during the Summer from years 3-6.
All children are encouraged to represent the school in PE at Brookfield and undertake a fair selection process. Whilst we are ambitious to achieve well – as evidenced by our burgeoning trophy cabinet – we also recognise that it is important to be inclusive. With this in mind, the school has taken a lead in organised a range of different intra-school competitions as well as participating in inclusive events organising by the Camden Schools Sports Association.
Through the high quality lessons developed by ‘Complete PE’ and adapted by our PE Lead, we are confident that all children will leave Brookfield with a positive mind-set, where they are able to work well both independently and as part of a team; understand, not just benefits on their physical health but also on their mental health and emotional regulation. We want to ensure that children are given multiple opportunities to compete in sport and activities to build their character and underpin our school values : kindness, responsibility and achievement.
